'Decisive Action' Amid Airport Safety Concerns

With a rash of aviation accidents across North America, and a frightening Delta Air Lines crash in Toronto taking place just days ago, Canadian pilots and air traffic controllers say “decisive action” is needed to strengthen “critical safety protections” for air travel.

As Canada’s federal, provincial, and territorial transport ministers gathered on 20FEB for their annual meeting, pilots and controllers say safety in the skies has to take precedence over saving money.

Travel agencies say some Canadians are boycotting U.S. travel

As Canadians look to warmer places to escape a frigid February, travel agents in Saskatchewan say some have been cancelling trips to the U.S. in reaction to looming tariff threats.

"People that we already have booked into California, Florida or Texas are [saying], 'maybe we should change our reservations and we should go to Mexico for a week,'" Nancy Thingelstad, the manager of Marlin Travel Swift Current, said.

U.S. President Donald Trump has said he would like to make Canada the 51st U.S. state and plans to implement multiple tariffs on Canada, including 25 per cent on all Canadian imports and another 25 per cent on steel and aluminum.

That’s due to the impact of tariffs on the U.S. dollar and other global currencies. Economists expect tariffs imposed on foreign imports to strengthen the U.S. dollar and potentially weaken major currencies like the euro, Canadian dollar and Japanese yen.

Canada’s high-speed rail plan gets multi-billion-dollar boost

Canada’s plan for high-speed rail are picking up steam with a multi-billion-dollar funding boost. The federal government announced the new funding and that a consortium has been chosen to develop the planned link between Toronto and Quebec City on Wednesday.

The project, dubbed “Alto,” would see fully electric trains transport passengers along the highly trafficked rail corridor at speeds of 300 kilometres per hour along 1,000 kilometres of track.

Spirit is going private (here is what you need to know)

On Feb. 20, Spirit announced that a bankruptcy court in the Southern District of New York had approved a reorganization plan that will take Spirit private and give control to its biggest bondholders.

With the plan approved by bankruptcy judge Sean Lane, Spirit could now formally emerge from bankruptcy in what it says will be "coming weeks."
