WestJet and Air Canada Both Cancel US Expansion Plans

Three major airlines are dropping plans to increase flights between Canada and the US, a clear indicator the slowdown in cross-border traffic shows no signs of abating.

Other airlines also have cut back on Canada-US flights as the tariff dispute lingers between the two countries. As previously reported by OpenJaw, JetBlue recently said it was withdrawing its plans to add flights between BOS and YHZ.

Porter Airlines has been known to zig while others zag, and they’re doing it again.

At a time when headlines about reduced air capacity between Canada and the US dominate the travel news, the cheeky Canadian carrier has moved forward with a new US flight from Pearson to LaGuardia, after serving Newark from its Toronto City Airport base for years.

Direct, year-round service between the two financial capitals began on 01MAY, with up to three flights a day between two of North America’s busiest hubs.

While he indicated that the meeting itself was a good sign that things are moving in a positive direction, Carney repeated what he had said during the campaign: that the traditional relationship with the U.S. is "over" and that his government is looking for new trading relationships with other partners.

Carney also emphasized that he's intent on building the Canadian economy to be less reliant on the U.S.

Visitation to Las Vegas in March fell 7.8% from March 2024, the third straight month it has declined, and the city's tourism agency is anticipating less room tax revenue in its next budget as a result.

While it is too soon to know for certain whether Canadians and Mexicans are less inclined to visit the U.S. and specifically Las Vegas because of heated U.S. political rhetoric, pending tariffs or other reasons, that hasn't stopped the speculation and planning.

The dispute began in February 2020 when the couple filed a complaint with the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA), after Air Canada denied their initial compensation claim.

The CTA, Canada's transport regulator, ordered the airline to pay the couple $2,000 in compensation. Instead, in late 2023, Air Canada took the couple to court to try to overturn the ruling.

For the remainder of this year, Niagara Region councillors and staff are not allowed to attend the United States for conferences or trade shows on behalf of the region — whether attending as attendees, presenters or exhibitors.

The motion does not prohibit councillors’ personal travel to the U.S.
