Lake Okanagan Resort among properties destroyed in West Kelowna wildfire

The historic Lake Okanagan Resort was one of an untold number of buildings destroyed by the wildfire still raging in West Kelowna, B.C. The 217-unit lakeside resort was developed in the 1970s and once hosted heads of government, including Margaret Thatcher and Brian Mulroney.

B.C. Wildfires: Travel and hotel restrictions lifting for West Kelowna

The British Columbia government says it is lifting travel and hotel accommodation restrictions for West Kelowna that were implemented in the wake of a devastating wildfire.

The province implemented travel restrictions to the Southern Interior on Saturday, a day after declaring a state of provincial emergency due to an explosion in wildfire activity amid strong winds and dry conditions.

The order was lifted for the rest of the region earlier this week.

Beijing and Ottawa are in talks aimed at increasing flights between China and Canada, following American deals and the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, but diplomatic spats and the aviation sector's gradual pace of change could prolong the turbulence.

"It's a political problem; I don't think it's a one-day solution or that we'll have the green light right away," said Glynnis Chan, a longtime Vancouver travel agent.
