Want more low-cost flight options in Canada? Flair's retiring CEO says the rules need to change

Stephen Jones, the outgoing CEO of Flair Airlines, has a message for Canadian air travelers: the country needs viable low-cost carriers. But Jones warns under the current rules, trying to compete with what he calls the Big Two — Air Canada and WestJet — is "a really tough game."

But with the demise of Lynx Air earlier this year — joining the list of Canadian discount airlines that couldn't stay in business, Flair remains the only ultra-low cost airline flying within Canada.

House passes No Hidden FEES Act, a major AHLA legislative priority

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the No Hidden FEES Act, a major American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) legislative priority that would ensure lodging cost transparency for consumers.

The legislation would establish a comprehensive single standard for transparent and mandatory fee displays across the lodging industry – from short-term rental platforms, to online travel agencies, metasearch sites, and hotels.

WestJet strike notice withdrawn as union, airline resume talks

A strike notice from WestJet’s unionized mechanics has been rescinded as the union representing the workers and the airline are returning to the bargaining table.

WestJet said in a statement late on Wednesday that it had appeared before the Canadian Industrial Relations Board to discuss the airline’s request for arbitration, in the negotiations with the Aircraft Maintenance Engineers and Tech Ops employees

Canadians Give Hawaii Highest Marks For Safety & Security

Most visitors – including Canadians – see Hawaii as a safe and secure destination, according to the islands’ latest Visitor Satisfaction and Activity Survey (VSAT), which surveyed visitors from multiple destinations who visited Hawaii in the fourth quarter of 2023. More than 90% of visitors from all markets rated Hawaii as “excellent” or “above average” when it comes to being a safe and secure destination, including 99.0% from Canada.

Canada has 37 national parks and 10 national-park reserves. The latter are managed in cooperation with Indigenous peoples.

The goal of Canada’s extensive park system is just like the USA: to protect lands that represent different ecosystems. There are a couple noticeable differences in how those landscapes are managed, though. For one, Parks Canada has embraced mountain biking and is actively developing purpose-built singletrack in many parks; mountain biking is not allowed on the trails in the majority of U.S. national parks. Also, thriving towns are located within many of the park borders, rather than nearby or adjacent as gateways.
