Prime Minister Mark Carney told his negotiators to walk away from the table after the Trump administration introduced late unacceptable demands on culture, autos and sovereignty that, when taken in concert with their overall approach to talks, revealed the U.S. was not interested in a “true economic partnership” with Canada.

In a departure from his usual diplomatic language, Carney suggested the U.S. sometimes signs trade deals in “pencil,” and while Canada’s government is united and working together, the same is not true of the Trump administration.

Government has extended the state of provincial emergency for a further seven days, until Saturday, Aug. 29, 2026, in response to the ongoing risk of wildfires in many parts of British Columbia.

The extension follows advice from emergency-management officials and ensures the Province continues to have access to emergency powers under the Emergency and Disaster Management Act if they are required.

To date, government has not needed to issue emergency orders under the state of emergency to respond to the current wildfire situation. However, maintaining the state of emergency ensures the tools needed to respond quickly remain available as wildfire conditions continue to evolve.

Cunning and furry thieves are outfoxing campers and cottagers at Great Blue Heron Provincial Park.

Sonnet McGuire, manager of the park located about 50 kilometres north of Prince Albert, says she started getting reports about shoes going missing in early July.

Visitors found single shoes left in bushes, on the side of the road, or even at the boat launch.

The culprits: a group — sometimes known as a skulk — of sly foxes with a taste for footwear
